Blinds and shades are versatile window treatments with distinctive features. Window blinds are rigid coverings with adjustable slats that offer exceptional light control, while shades are continuous pieces of fabric that lift and lower. Window Blinds vs. Shades: Things to Consider
Light Control & Privacy
Blinds offer superior variable light control with adjustable slats, but unwanted light can sneak through the small gaps between them. Shades don't have space for light to enter and provide exceptional privacy. Still, they are an all-or-nothing solution since you must raise them to enjoy natural light, eliminating your privacy. If you're committed to shades, we suggest a top-down/bottom-up design or the Duolite® feature that places an opaque liner behind a sheer front shade on a single headrail.
Aesthetics
Blinds' solid material and clean lines make them ideal for traditional, modern, and minimalist interiors. They are also a perfect complement to drapery if you want to layer multiple window treatments. Shades are an excellent way to add softness and texture to a space. They also come in a wider variety of styles than blinds. You can choose from sheer, cellular, woven, Roman, and roller designs.
Maintenance
How much time do you want to spend cleaning your window treatments? If the answer is "As little as possible.", blinds may be your best choice. Blinds accumulate less dust than shades; cleaning them is as easy as wiping the slats with a soft cloth. You can remove dirt from fabric shades by vacuuming them using the upholstery attachment on low suction. Shades also pick up fingerprints and other stains that may require professional cleaning to remove.
Durability
Blinds are inherently more durable than shades. Choose blinds for your windows if you have a busy household with young children or pets.
