Maximize Space in Your Child’s Small Bedroom

Any parent will tell you that having kids means having lots of “stuff.” Most of your child’s belongings can go in their bedroom, but how do you make a small room work? The Amazing Blinds & Shutters team has some fun and easy ideas to implement.

Choose the Right Bed

The main feature of any bedroom is the bed. When choosing one for your child’s room, opt for a high sleeper model to keep floor space accessible. Young children can use the area to play, while a small desk makes the perfect study spot for older kids.

If you have more than one kiddo sharing the room, it doesn’t get much better than bunk beds. Another strategy for small spaces is to avoid upgrading the size of bedroom furniture until you have to.

A Room with a View

When space is at a premium, bulky window treatments are out. Our favorites for small spaces are roller and Roman shades. Designer Roller Shades nearly disappear when fully raised and are available in more than 350 color and fabric combinations, so you’ll surely find one your kids will love. Roller shades are also cordless, so they’re a safe choice for even your youngest little ones.

Vignette® Modern Roman Shades offer a more sophisticated aesthetic that pre-teens and teens will appreciate. With no exposed rear cords, this style is perfect for helping keep a teenager’s room looking (a little) cleaner. The Duolite® feature allows you to pair a sheer shade for daytime privacy with an opaque liner to accommodate older kids’ preference for sleeping in.

Don’t Waste Wall Space

You’re missing out on significant storage opportunities by not taking advantage of a room’s vertical space. Floating shelves are great for books and small decorative items, like stuffed animals and trophies.

A peg rail is perfect for hanging hats, a backpack, or a bathrobe, especially if you’re short on closet space. Installing a fold-down desk is another fantastic idea to give your child space for reading or small hobbies, like drawing. When not in use, a fold-down desk takes up very minimal space.

Use Color Consciously

Light colors can make spaces look and feel larger. Painting the trim and walls in the same color will also create the illusion of more space. You can incorporate pops of color and texture using area rugs and window treatments.

You can easily switch out these items to keep up with the ever-changing preferences of kids. Small furniture, like shelving, desks, and bedframes, is another ideal location to use fun accent colors.
