Rules for Hanging Drapes and Shades

At Amazing Blinds & Shutters, we know that you can have the most stylish window treatments available, but if they aren’t installed correctly, they will not look half as good as they should.

We’ve got some easy-to-follow tips to help you hang your drapes the right way.

Hunter Douglas Design Studio™ Side Panels & Drapery, Hanging shades and drapes near Amarillo, Texas (TX).

Hang Them at Least 6” Above the Frame

If you’re hanging drapes less than 6” above the window frame, there’s room for improvement. Windows tend to be the focal point of a room, so hanging the shades high will draw the eye towards the ceiling, which gives the illusion of a more spacious room. You should also extend the rod beyond the sides of the frame by several inches. This will keep the stackback, or the additional fabric, of drapery from blocking any sunlight.

Take Accurate Drape Measurements

Ill-fitting drapery creates an awkward eyesore in any room. To get the right panel length, measure from the top of the window trim to the floor. Reduce the number by an inch for drapery that breaks at the floor, or add an inch or two for a small puddle. For width, measure across from window trim to window trim, and add eight inches to each side of the window frame measurement to get the correct width.

Measuring for Shades

Shades are usually installed with an inside mount, which requires a different measuring technique. You need to measure horizontally at the top, bottom, and middle for the most accurate number. To find the perfect length for shades, measure the vertical height inside the frame at the left, right, and center. There’s even less room for error when measuring for shades. Any mistake will be very noticeable with an inside mount.

Selecting a Fabric

The fabric of your drapes can affect the look and feel of the entire room. Design Studio™ Side Panels & Drapery comes in a vast array of premium fabrics. For a clean, crisp aesthetic that isn’t too fussy, stick with linen. Cotton and cotton blends are excellent choices for a more casual look with some structure. The suite of products features exclusive fabrics from some of today’s top designers, including Marcie Bronkar, Rebecca Atwood, and Seema Krish. If you’re unsure what material would best complement your interior, one of our window treatments specialists would be happy to assist you.
