Cleaning Tips for Hunter Douglas Blinds & Shutters

If you were to ask a group of people, “Who likes to clean their blinds or shutters?”, you’d probably hear crickets. Of the unenjoyable chores, cleaning slats on window treatments is likely one of the most tedious. We don’t want you to spend any more time than necessary cleaning yours, so we have put together some tips to make it easier.

Several factors contribute to how often you should clean your blinds or shutters, including allergies, kids, and pets. Ask four home experts how frequently they clean theirs and you will get four different answers.

  • Each time you clean your house
  • Once a month
  • Once each season; Spring, Summer, Winter, Fall
  • A deep cleaning twice a year

As you can see, the suggestions vary greatly. At the end of the day, it’s up to you. Some people clean their window coverings every week, some only before houseguests arrive. Should you be the latter, we promise your secret is safe.

Dusting Aluminum, Genuine Wood, & Faux Wood

Dusting by hand is a common way to get it done, especially if you don’t have many blinds or shutters to clean. Three popular methods include:

  1. Using a soft cloth or feather duster, start at the top of your blinds and wipe across each slat. When you reach the bottom, reverse the direction of the slats and repeat the process.
  2. Grab a sock and put it in your hand. Open the slats slightly, and run your hand across each slat, wiping the top and bottom at the same time.
  3. You can use special tools that allow you to clean both sides of multiple slats simultaneously. These tools can be found at most major retailers, and are especially helpful if you have large windows or many windows.

Your vacuum’s brush attachment can make quick work of cleaning blinds and shutters. Simply run the brush across each slat, starting at the top and working downward. When you reach the bottom, rotate the slats and repeat.

Regardless of which method you prefer, try spraying your duster with an anti-static spray before dusting to help attract dust and leave surfaces more dust resistant. Make sure to test any product on an inconspicuous area first or call and ask one of our team members. We’re happy to help!

Washing Aluminum & Faux Wood

Sometimes dusting just isn’t enough. The good news is that metal and faux wood window treatments can be given a bath. The process is a bit more involved but easy enough. Start by taking your blinds down from the window and lay them flat in your bathtub. Fill with just enough water to cover, then add 3 cups of white vinegar and a small amount of dishwashing liquid. Soak your window coverings for about 10 minutes then wipe each slat with a sponge. You can use a toothbrush to get in any small spaces or crevices. Rinse well with clean water and lay flat across a towel rack or on the floor to dry.

If your blinds or shutters are not submersible use a mixture of warm water and a mild detergent and wipe with a sponge.

Cleaning Natural Wood

Natural wood cannot be submerged in water, and care should be taken to not get the surface too wet with any product while cleaning. Lightly spray a soft cloth with furniture polish and wipe the slat to protect the wood’s surface and restore shine.

If your genuine wood blinds or shutters are particularly grimy, follow these steps to clean them:

  1. Combine mild detergent and room temperature water.
  2. Use a clean, soft cloth to wipe a small area.
  3. Use another cloth dipped in clean water to wipe the cleaning solution off.
  4. Dry immediately with a dry cloth.

Repeat as necessary where needed.
